Dear Congregant,

On this, the eve of the New Year, 5769, I wanted to take just a moment to wish you and yours a healthy, peaceful, and fulfilling year.

As I said in my comments during our September 19 Friday evening service, this High Holyday period challenges each of us to review this past year and respond to the question of what we did with the year granted us since last Rosh HaShanah. To use the metaphor of these holy days, we are standing before God asking that he give us another year. However, to be truly worthy of another year we must review our actions during the year now ending and respond to the challenge posed by these questions: during this past year have we made the world a little bit better by our presence and actions; have we increased the help we extend to others; have we expanded our knowledge; have we developed spiritually?  This is what the High Holydays are all about. How will each of us respond to his challenge?

This past year has been very difficult economically for many in our society, and this epidemic is certainly affecting more and more people with each passing day. The financial services industry is a large employer of many people in our area. The problems plaguing that industry have touched each of us, some more directly than others.  I am sure that we all join together in praying that the New Year bring a resolution to this plague.

L’Shanah Tova Tekateyvu, May we each be inscribed and sealed in the Book of Life for 5769.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Ken Tarlow
